Investor services

Kenya Investment Authority (Keninvest) has a one stop center which is responsible for facilitating investments, offering investors with the relevant information and providing pre-investment and after-care services to investors. Once investors register with Keninvest, they are entitled to an investment certificate upon request and facilitation in relation to foreign taxpayer registration, immigration services, National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) facilitation and Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) services

Investor registration

Investment registration with KenInvest is mandatory to enable investors access facilitation services. A minimum capital investment of US$100,000 for foreign investors and KES 1,000,000 for local investors is required to obtain this registration.

Upon registration the investor is issued with an acknowledgement letter.

Investor registration (Online)

Investment registration with KenInvest is mandatory to enable investors access facilitation services. This registration is now available online through the Kenya Investment Single Window. A minimum capital investment of US$100,000 for foreign investors and KES 1,000,000 for local investors is required. Upon registration the investor is issued with an investor acknowledgement receipt.

Obtain an investment certificate

An investor registered with Kenya Investment Authority obtains an Investment Certificate upon request and proof of investment of at least 100 000 USD or its equivalent for a foreign investor and 1 000 000 KES or its equivalent for a local investor.

With this certificate the investor benefits from the initial issuance of any additional licences required for their operations except for health, security and environmental certificates for a maximum period of one year.

The investor is entitled to three class D entry permits for management or technical staff and three class C, F or G entry permits for owners, shareholders or partners for a maximum period of two years.

Investors wishing to obtain an investment certificate in Kenya can access this service online through the Kenya Investment Single Window.

Immigration services expand_more expand_less

The Directorate of immigration and registration of persons is responsible for the issuance of the several classes of permits and passes.

Kenya Investment Authority is mandated under the Investment Promotion Act to facilitate foreign investors with projects worth 100 000 USD dollars and above to obtain permits and passes. Additionally, the Authority has an immigration officer situated in the one stop centre who facilitates issuance of the permits and passes.

Immigration facilitation (Online)

Kenya Investment Authority facilitates foreign investors to obtain work permits and passes through the issuance of a recommendation letter to the Department of Immigration Services. Upon issuance of this letter the investor applies for the permit through the Kenya Foreign Nationals Service Portal. This facilitation is now available online through the Kenya Investment Single Window.

Class A work permit

This permit is issued to a person who intends to engage, whether alone or in partnership, in prospecting for minerals or mining in Kenya.

Class B work permit

This permit is issued to a person who intends to engage, whether alone or in partnership, in the business of agriculture or animal husbandry in Kenya.

Class C work permit

This permit is issued to a person who is a member of a prescribed profession (doctors, dentists, advocates etc as listed in 8th schedule of the Kenya Citizen and Immigration Regulations) who intends to practice that profession, whether alone or in partnership, in Kenya.

Class D work permit

This permit is issued to a person who is offered specific employment by a specific employer and who is in possession of skills or qualifications that are not available in Kenya and whose engagement in that employment will be of benefit to Kenya.

Class F work permit

This permit is issued to a person who intends to engage, whether alone or in partnership, in a specific manufacture in Kenya.

Class G work permit

This permit is issued to a person who intends to engage, whether alone or in partnership, in a specific trade, business, consultancy in Kenya.

Special passes

This is issued to person(s) who wishes to enter Kenya or remain in Kenya for temporarily conducting any business, trade or profession

Dependant's pass

This is issued to persons who are Dependants (spouse, parent or guardian) of:

  • Kenya Citizens
  • Permit holders
  • Exempted persons
  • Permanent residents

Foreign taxpayer facilitation (Online)

Kenya Investment Authority facilitates foreign investors to obtain tax registration. An applicant is required to log into the Kenya Investment Single Window, fill the required fields and attach a certified passport. Once this is done, the application will be reviewed and pin Issued by the Kenya Revenue Authority to the applicants email.

Electricity connection

Kenya Power and Lighting Company owns and operates most of the electricity transmission and distribution system in Kenya. The Company’s key mandate is to plan for sufficient electricity generation and transmission capacity to meet demand; building and maintaining the power distribution in the country.

Kenya Investment Authority has an officer from Kenya Power and Lighting Company in its one stop center shop who assists registered investors to obtain power connection and in any other power related issues.
