Immigration services

The Directorate of Immigration and Registration of person is responsible for the issuance of the following:
  • Visas
  • Foreign national (Alien) registration certificates.
  • Permits and passes.
Work permits expand_more expand_less
 Immigration Department issues several classes of permits and passes to foreign nationals. The type of permit issued depends on the proposed activity to be carried out in Kenya. Investors registered with KenInvest may use its facilitation services (click here  to access its facilitation procedures for work permits).
Class A (Mining and prospecting) work permit

This permit is issued to a person who intends to engage, whether alone or in partnership, in prospecting for minerals or mining in Kenya.

Class B (Agriculture and animal husbandry) work permit

This permit is issued to a person who intends to engage, whether alone or in partnership, in the business of agriculture or animal husbandry in Kenya.

Class C (Prescribed professionals) work permit

This permit is issued to a person who is a member of a prescribed profession (doctors, dentists, advocates etc as listed in 8th schedule of the Kenya Citizen and Immigration Regulations) who intends to practice that profession, whether alone or in partnership, in Kenya.

Class D (Employees) work permit

This permit is issued to a person who is offered specific employment by a specific employer and who is in possession of skills or qualifications that are not available in Kenya and whose engagement in that employment will be of benefit to Kenya.

Class F (Manufacturing) work permit

This permit is issued to a person who intends to engage, whether alone or in partnership, in a specific manufacture in Kenya.

Class G (Investor) work permit

This permit is issued to a person who intends to engage, whether alone or in partnership, in a specific trade, business, consultancy in Kenya.

Class I (Missionaries) work permit

This permit is issued to a person who is a member of an institution registered under the Society's Act who is engaged as a missionary, Member of a company limited by guarantee, Member of a trust registered under the Trustees Act and is approved by the Government of Kenya, and whose presence in Kenya will be of benefit to Kenya.

Special passes

This is issued to person(s) who wishes to enter Kenya or remain in Kenya for temporarily conducting any business, trade or profession

Student pass

This is issued to foreign students who wish to purse their education in Kenya's Education or Training Institutions where they have been accepted or admitted.

Dependant's pass

This is issued to persons who are Dependants (spouse, parent or guardian) of:

  • Kenya Citizens
  • Permit holders
  • Exempted persons
  • Permanent residents

Single entry Visa
Single entry visa allows one to enter Kenya once for sightseeing and short term business purposes. The visa is valid for three months and allows a re-entry to Kenya from Tanzania and Uganda

Foreign national registration
All foreigners who have been residing in Kenya for a continuous period of at least 3 months are required to be registered and issued with an alien card. The alien card serves as an identification document during their stay in the country.

Security bond

Under the Kenya Citizen and Immigration Regulations 2012 foreign citizens may be required to execute a security bond before they can be issued with a work permit. The bond can be in the form of a deposit or bankers / insurance guarantee.
